How to deposit and fund your OKX account for derivatives trading

Note: This article is for verified users trading X-Perps in the EEA region. This article covers the full journey from depositing funds to being ready to place your first X-Perps order. If your deposit has arrived but you are still seeing margin errors or your balance does not appear available for trading, this guide will help you identify which step you may have missed and how to resolve it.

What accounts do I need to know about?

On OKX, your balance is organised across two main account types:

  • Funding account: used for deposits, withdrawals, and general asset holding

  • Trading account: used for active trading, including X-Perps order placement

Funds deposited to OKX arrive in your Funding account by default. Before placing X-Perps orders, you need to transfer them to your Trading account. This is a deliberate structural separation; funds in the Funding account are not accessible for margin or order placement until the transfer is completed. This distinction matters because it is the single most common reason traders see "insufficient margin" errors even when they can clearly see a balance in their account. The funds are there, they are simply in the wrong account type.

What can I use to fund my X-Perps account?

X-Perps on OKX support multi-asset margin. You can use the following assets as collateral without needing to sell your existing holdings first: BTC, ETH, SOL, USDC, USDG, or DOGE.This means if you already hold BTC or ETH on OKX, you can put those holdings to work as margin directly, rather than converting to a stablecoin first. However, keep in mind that the value of your collateral is assessed in USD terms. If the price of your margin asset falls while a position is open, your effective margin level also falls and your liquidation price moves closer. This is an important consideration when using volatile assets like BTC or ETH as margin, rather than a stablecoin.

If you are depositing specifically for derivatives trading and want to keep things straightforward, USDC is a practical starting point: it is a supported margin asset, its value is stable relative to USD, and it is supported across most major networks. For the most up-to-date list of supported margin assets, always check the X-Perps contract details on the OKX platform, as this may be updated over time.

How do I deposit funds to OKX?

Most traders in the EEA will start by adding funds via fiat. OKX supports SEPA/SEPA Instant, Visa & Mastercard as well as PayPal. This is the quickest way to get started if you don't already hold crypto.

To deposit fiat on the app:

  1. Open the OKX app

  2. In Simple Mode choose Transfer

  3. Choose Deposit

  4. Select your local currency

  5. Choose your payment method — SEPA Instant, credit ard, or PayPal. For USD deposits, bank transfer is the only available option.

  6. Complete the purchase — funds will appear in your Funding account

To deposit fiat on web:

  1. Log in to your account on web

  2. Choose Deposit

  3. Select Cash

  4. Choose your payment method — SEPA Instant, credit card, or PayPal. For USD deposits, bank transfer is the only available option.

  5. Complete the purchase — funds will appear in your Funding account

If you already hold crypto on an external wallet or another exchange, you can deposit it directly to OKX.

On the app

  1. Open the OKX app and go to Assets

  2. Tap Deposit

  3. Select the asset you want to deposit (e.g. USDC, ETH)

  4. Choose your deposit network and copy your deposit address

  5. Send funds from your external wallet or exchange to that address

  6. Wait for the deposit to be confirmed on-chain

On the web

  1. Log in to your OKX account and go to Assets

  2. Select Deposit

  3. Choose Crypto

  4. Choose your asset and network

  5. Copy your deposit address and send funds from your external source

  6. Wait for on-chain confirmation

Important: Always double-check the network before sending. Sending funds on the wrong network may result in permanent loss. The deposit address shown is specific to the asset and network selected — do not reuse addresses across different assets or networks.

How long does a deposit take?

Deposit times vary by asset and network. Most deposits confirm within minutes, but some networks require more on-chain confirmations before the balance becomes available. You can check your deposit status in the Deposit history section. If a deposit is taking longer than expected, look up your transaction hash on the relevant blockchain explorer to check its status directly.

How do I transfer funds from my Funding account to my Trading account?

Once your deposit is confirmed, transfer your funds to the Trading account before placing any X-Perps orders.

On the app

  1. Go to Assets

  2. Tap Transfer

  3. Set From to Funding account and To to Trading account

  4. Select the asset and enter the amount

  5. Tap Confirm

On the web

  1. Go to Assets

  2. Select Transfer

  3. Choose Funding as the source and Trading as the destination

  4. Enter the amount and confirm

Transfers between accounts are internal and instant with no fees. You can transfer part of your balance or the full amount — only funds in the Trading account will be available for margin and order placement.

What should I check before placing an X-Perps order?

Before placing your first order, confirm:

  • your deposit has been confirmed on-chain

  • your funds have been transferred from the Funding account to the Trading account

  • your available balance in the Trading account is sufficient to cover your intended margin

  • no funds are locked in open orders or positions from previous activity

A common cause of "insufficient margin" errors is funds remaining in the Funding account after deposit.

Why is my balance showing but not available for trading?

Funds are in the Funding account, not the Trading account The most common reason. Complete the internal transfer and check your available balance in the Trading account.

Funds are tied to open orders or existing positions Reserved margin from open orders or active positions is not available for new trades. Cancel orders or close positions you no longer need to release that margin.

Deposit is still pending on-chain confirmation Check your deposit history for the confirmation status. Wait for the existing deposit to confirm before taking further action

Asset is not supported as margin for this contract Not all assets are accepted as margin for every X-Perps contract. If your balance is in an unsupported asset, you will need to convert to a supported one first. Check the contract's margin requirements before converting.

Account mode mismatch If you recently changed your account mode, verify that your Trading account is correctly configured for X-Perps. Some account modes affect how margin is handled across product types.

How do I check my available balance before placing an order?

Your available margin is shown in the order panel when you select a contract and set your leverage. This reflects your usable margin after accounting for any reserved funds or open positions. You can also see a full breakdown by going to Assets and selecting Trading account — this shows total equity, margin in use, and available balance across all supported assets. If the available amount is lower than expected, check the open orders and positions sections to see where the remaining balance is being held.
